The smelting process of aluminum is a key step used in the recycling process and enables the conversion of aluminum from its previous forms (for example, aluminum containers or sheets) into pure aluminum metal. The smelting process of aluminum usually includes the following steps:
 
Collection and Preparation: Recycled aluminum products are collected and cleaned. Contaminations, paint residues and other foreign materials are removed. This step is important to increase the efficiency of the aluminum smelting process.
 
Cutting and Grinding: Large pieces of aluminum are cut and ground into smaller pieces for the smelting process. This allows the aluminum to be melted more quickly and efficiently.
 
Melting Furnace: Milled aluminum pieces are placed in a melting furnace at high temperatures. The melting furnace is usually heated by gas or electrical energy. High temperature is required because the melting temperature of aluminum is approximately 660.3°C (1220.5°F).
